The overnight event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and continue through Saturday morning at Mount Vernon High School.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 36 teams comprising of 235 participants have been registered for the Mount Vernon Relay For Life. More than two days before participants start circling the track, nearly $23,000 has already been raised for the American Cancer Society.

The Amani Cancer Crushers is leading the way, coming just dollars short of $4,000 with two days left to collect donations. Royster Family and Friends has raised more than $2,000, while the team from the Mount Zion Christian Baptist Church has solicited approximately $1,325 for the cause.

Individually, Georgiana and Beth McGlinchey have combined to raise more than $2,000 for the Amani team. Helen Royster and Brenda Holmes – representing the Royster family and Mount Zion Church respectively – have each collected more than $1,000 for the cause.

Anyone with last minute questions, comments or donations can contact kerry.wong@cancer.org or mtvrelay@gmail.com, or visit the city’s Relay for Life website.

“Our family can’t make it this year, but we made sure that we donated what we could to one of our neighbors who will be representing his team at the event” resident Mike Lopez said near the high school. “It’s such an important cause and it’s a disease that affects every family.”
