MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon religious and community leaders will host a rally and march this weekend to support renovations of the city’s Fourth Street Park.
The community is invited to kickoff “Unity in the Community” at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a march from Fourth Street Park to Unity Baptist Tabernacle, where Rev. Edward Mulraine will be putting on a day of family fun.
Each year, the event focuses on a particular concern in the community. This year, “Unity in the Community” will concentrate on social injustice. Co-sponsors include officials from the Greater Centennial AME Zion Church, Macedonia Baptist Church and county government.
In recent years, Fourth Street Park – where many professional basketball players have honed their skills over the years – has deteriorated and fallen into a state of disrepair.
Funding for renovations were approved by the Westchester County Board of Legislators through the Legacy Fund, but the release of funds as since been held up. Organizers with “Unity for the Community” plan to raise awareness for park renovations during this year’s event.
