Stepinac Will Be First U.S. High School To Stage 'Billy Elliot'

Stepinac’s acclaimed Drama Club will perform the musical about a boy in a rough mining town in England who would rather dance than fight.

Performances will be in the school’s Major Bowes Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1, Saturday, May 2, Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 and at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 10.

"Billy Elliot the Musical" is based on the 2000 film "Billy Elliot." The music is by Elton John, and the book and lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the film's screenplay. The plot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The story of his personal struggle and fulfillment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the UK miners' strike (1984–1985) in County Durham, in North Eastern England.

Last year, Stepinac’s Drama Club was one of only a few schools in the U.S. that were licensed to perform Disney’s “Mary Poppins.” The school’s production of the Disney classic earned top Metro Awards, the highest honor that high school theatrical groups can win.

The Drama Club is headed by Frank Portanova, vice principal for academics and curriculum, who serves as the show’s director and Keith Sunderland who is the producer.
