Iva Nicholson, 79, Formerly Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. – Iva B. Nicholson, a former Norwalk resident, died Jan. 5 at McLean Home in Simsbury. She was 79.

A Stamford native, Nicholson served as assistant finance officer for the town of Darien for more than 20 years.

Born Sept. 6, 1933, in Stamford, she was the daughter of Thomas and Harriet Hoyt Benham. Raised in Stamford, Nicholson lived in Norwalk for more than 50 years before moving to Windsor four years ago.

While working, raising her children and caring for her parents, Nicholson went back to school and received an associate's degree in accounting from Norwalk Community College.

She was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Norwalk, where she served on several committees, sang in the choir and was director of the nursery school for 10 years. After moving to Windsor, she joined the First Church in Windsor Congregational.

Nicholson enjoyed taking ski vacations with her children while they were growing up, golfing with friends and traveling with her husband, brothers and sisters-in-law. She also enjoyed playing pinochle.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donald E. Nicholson Sr.; a son, Donald E. Nicholson Jr., of Norwalk; a daughter, Leigh (Peter) Kuhn, of East Granby; two sisters, Winnifred (John) Chorotas and Helena Ann Starkey, both of Norwalk; and two sisters-in-law, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Church in Windsor Congregational. Burial at First Church Memorial Garden will be private. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
