The film, which opens nation-wide on Friday, Nov. 14 is directed by Gina Price-Bythewood of "Love & Basketball" and "The Secret Life of Bees" and also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw of "Belle" and Minnie Driver. After the film, Picture House critic-in-residence Marshall Fine will host the conversation with Parker.
"Beyond the Lights" is the story of Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the music world’s latest superstar. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge—until she meets Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker), a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail. Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance. But it is ultimately Kaz's love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be. Versatile and committed to his craft, Parker quickly made his mark in Hollywood by taking on intense and strong-willed parts in historical dramas. Parker landed his breakout role as one of the first African-American college debaters in 2007’s "The Great Debaters,"directed by and co-starring his idol Denzel Washington.
