MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon is set to host a workshop to help children prevent childhood obesity and type-2 diabetes.
“The Power of Food: Healthy Eating Is Mad Cool!” will help youths and staff members understand and learn the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make strong dietary choices.
Robert Dell’Amore and Elaine Medin, with the Power of Food Productions, will take participants through a sensory-stimulated hands-on workshop. The instructors will guide those in attendance about healthy food preparation, including how to make meals that are completely salt, butter and sugar free.
According to Dell’Amore and Medin, studies show that when youth are taught the skills for healthy meal purchases and preparation, they learn lifelong lessons that improve their diet and increase healthy food purchasing decisions.
In addition to healthy meal preparation, two culinary researchers and professional chefs will teach basic knife skills and introduce new fruit and vegetable combinations.
The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. April 12 at the Boys & Girls Club on Sixth Avenue. The first hour will be a tutoring session for the students, focusing on safe and healthy cooking techniques. The second hour will feature the meals that are prepared, with oral discussion and written feedback on the new foods.
