The documentary, which will be screened at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, follows Richard and Mildred Loving. The couple was sentenced to one year in jail for being in an interracial marriage, which was prohibited in the state of Virginia. Following the film, Debra and Charles Stern, co-founders of the Amani Public Charter School in Mount Vernon, along with other couples will discuss their experience as an interracial couple. Peoples United Bank will sponsor refreshments for the screening.
"The Loving Story" is an Augusta Films Production. It was directed by Nancy Buirski, produced by Nancy Buirski and Elisabeth Haviland James, and edited by James. The documentary is fiscally sponsored by Living Archives, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, created by legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker, and the Southern Documentary Fund.
"This powerful documentary is one of four films in the "Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle," an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America’s civil rights history," representatives said. "'The Abolitionists,' 'Slavery by Another Name,' and 'Freedom Riders,' include dramatic scenes of incidents in the 150-year effort to achieve equal rights for all. These films will be shown in their entirety at the Mount Vernon Library. Dates and names of guest speakers and panelists will be announced."
