MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – In the 1960s, Mount Vernon resident Brad “Mabu” Young formed an eclectic and versatile musical group that vowed to play different music depending on the venue.
Forty years later, Young will return to the city when he performs as part of the Mount Vernon Summer Breeze Concert Series.
Young, who plays drums, the keyboard and sings, started the band during the late 1960s while he was still a student at Mount Vernon High School. From there, things only evolved, and the band has played at venues in Canada, Jamaica, Senegal and stateside.
The concert series kicked off on Tuesday with a performance by jazz trumpeter Kenny Lee. Each concert will engender a different genre of music, from Reggae and Caribbean to R&B and gospel. It will run through Sept. 23.
Mabu’s Ark Band will be playing a series of R&B favorites beginning at 7 p.m. at the City Hall Plaza on Saturday.
