MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Hundreds of Jamaicans from around Westchester County filled the streets of Mount Vernon to celebrate their country’s independence over the weekend.
Shades of black, green and gold peppered Fourth Avenue as residents carried flags and donned their native colors as part of the Summer Breeze Concert Series.
“It was impossible to tell where everyone was from,” Nolan Martin, the master of ceremonies said. “But I can say with certainty that the entire atmosphere was incredibly awesome.”
Speeches were planned, but were kept to a minimum as those in attendance waved flags and listened to a series of Jamaican and Caribbean performers. At the event, Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis congratulated the crowd.
“I wish to congratulate you on your country’s 51st anniversary of independence,” he said. “This is an incredible turnout, really big. You need to do this again next year.”
