State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, who visited three schools Wednesday, stopped at the high school first, where the staff and students have had to contend with unbearable moldy smells, according to a report by News12.

Earlier this month, the senator announced that $1 million in emergency repair funds had been allocated through the State and Municipal Facilities Funding Program, which is overseen by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

The East Ramapo school district will first have to conduct an environmental review and send out for bids, according to media reports.

Carlucci has called conditions at the school deplorable.

Elia, who promised Wednesday that the state would be more responsive to the needs of children in the district, also visited two elementary schools in Ramapo, according to News12's story.

Also on the tour was Schools Superintendent Deborah Wortham, Carlucci's office said.
