YONKERS, N.Y. -- It's no secret that Americans don't get enough sleep. Currently, 60 million Americans suffer from poor sleep quality, and more than 40 million meet the diagnostic criteria for sleep disorders. When people don't get enough sleep, they can suffer from a variety of short-term ailments. Patients who do not receive the recommended hours of sleep per night feel a lack of energy, irritability and loss of appetite. If left untreated, inadequate sleep can trigger long-term health issues such as obesity, diabetes, anxiety, stroke or cardiac arrest.

Through research and testing, doctors have discovered insomnia can be caused by factors such as medicine side-effects, psychiatric illness or lifestyle pressures. Everything from what we eat and drink, to how often we look at screens can contribute to sleep quality.

To meet the growing incidence of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, St. John’s Riverside Hospital has opened Sleep Diagnostic Centers at both its Dobbs Ferry and Andrus Pavilion locations. Both locations offer a convenient, quiet setting designed to help restore the connection between a well-rested body and a healthy body. Through an overnight stay, technicians are able monitor a patient's heart, brainwaves and airflow, providing the necessary information to create a custom sleep treatment plan.

“St. John’s Riverside Hospital understands the relationship between a good night’s sleep and the sense of well-being and good health,” said Dr. Rajendra Rampersaud, a pulmonologist at St. John’s Riverside.
