Habitat For Humanity Celebrates Three Kings Day, Sets MLK Buildathon

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- A New Rochelle-based volunteer organization that builds housing for folks in need has set several events for January, says its CEO Jim Killoran.

Habitat for Humanity of Westchester will be celebrating the Christian feast day, Three Kings Day (Dios de Los 3 Reyes), aka Epiphany, with a community breakfast from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, at its headquarters, 659 Main St.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Gifts will be given to children as part of the Three Kings Day tradition, Killoran said.

Habitat will also kick off its annual Martin Luther King Jr. buildathon starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 and ending at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16.

On Sunday, Jan. 29, Habitat will host a “Veteran Valentines” event from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Cards and care packages will be made during the event and sent to U.S. military personnel serving overseas, Killoran said.

Donations of card-making supplies and items for the care packages are requested. A donation of $10 will get participants a free 50/50 raffle ticket.

Some food ideas for care packages, include: powdered drink mixes, meal enhancers such as ramen noodles, seasoned salt and individual ketchup packages; energy bars, beef jerky, small, hard packages of snacks such as nuts or pretzels, candy and gum.

Personal care items needed include toothbrushes, disposable razors, shampoo, tissues, eye drops, lip balm, feminine hygiene products and foot powder.

Also useful would be disposable hand-warmers, goggle style sunglasses, 100 percent cotton socks and underwear, fingerless gloves long johns and stocking caps.

Reading materials, word games and puzzles, batteries, pens, pencils, stamps are also on the list.

Habitat builds and repairs homes for veterans who have returned to the country.

The organization holds orientation classes for volunteers at 6 p.m. on Mondays at its Main Street offices.
