Get Internet Safety Tips In Mount Vernon Schools Presentation

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Parents in the Mount Vernon City School District are encouraged to attend an upcoming Internet safety presentation.

Topics will include the dangers associated with the Internet and long term impacts associated with social networking behaviors. It is geared toward the parents or guardians of young people who utilize social networking sites or apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Twitter and Facebook.

The informational presentation will take place Friday, Jan. 15, at 5 p.m. in Graham School, at 421 East Fifth St. in Mount Vernon.

The event is sponsored by Mount Vernon City School District’s School Counseling Department. The Office of Family and Community Engagement will feature Thomas Grimes of New York’s Finest Speakers. 

“This presentation will provide parents with an explicit understanding of what children and teens are doing every day online,” said Superintendent of schools Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton. “Parents will be informed about how seemingly innocent behaviors like 'status updates' or 'tagging pictures' can have a long term impact.” 

The presentation will teach parents how to do the folowing: 

  • Find their child online 
  • Find their child’s friends on the sites and apps 
  • Navigate social media 
  • Understand potential life threatening scenarios 
  • Understand “social networking” 
  • Talk (and listen) to their child about the Internet and the dangers associated with it
  • Offer alternatives to blocking social networking sites
