MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Veteran TV journalist Cheryl Wills, who has written about her great-great-great grandfather Sandy Wills' fight for freedom, has turned the true tale of heroism into an illustrated children’s book and will speak in Mount Vernon next month.
Wills will speak about “The Emancipation of Grandpa Sandy Wills” at an event at the Wartburg Adult Day Services Center at 1:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15.
Sandy Wills was a former slave who fought for the Union as a member of the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War.
The children’s book is also for sale on Amazon, center officials said.
Before buying a copy, first head to smile.amazon.com and select Wartburg’s Home Foundation Inc., the center said. Five percent of purchases will go to support the center’s services.
The center is at 1 Wartburg Place, Mount Vernon.
