MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – In an effort to promote local businesses and increase the amount of local shopping that gets done this holiday season, Mount Vernon officials have announced there will be free parking leading up to Christmas and Hanukkah.

There will be free parking in Mount Vernon from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Dec. 16-26.

Beginning Dec. 16 and continuing through Dec. 26, meter enforcement will be suspended at Lot 1 on South Fifth Avenue, Lot 2 and the parking garage on North Third Avenue, the garage at Roosevelt Square and the Fleetwood parking garage.

“Motorists are reminded (that) municipal Lot 2, located on Gramatan Avenue and North Street has been temporarily relocated to a lot across the street at North Third and Oakley Avenues,” officials noted in a statement announcing the continuation of the annual holiday tradition.

At lots that aren’t specified as free for the holidays, parking enforcement officers will be on the prowl, making rounds throughout the city’s other lots. Motorists and shoppers that aren’t in free lots must pay meters and any fines that may be issued as a result of illegal parking.
