MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau is accepting applications for the Safe Haven After-School Program.

“Children need safe places to go after school, and we have collaboratively provided that space where young people can receive educational and social enrichment,” said Mayor Ernest Davis.

The 2015 Safe Haven-After School Program consent forms can be obtained from the Youth Bureau’s website or at the main office of your child’s school. The deadline to return consent forms is Friday, Oct. 2.

Once the program is filled, applications no longer will be accepted. The program was established to provide youths ages 7-12 with homework assistance and academic tutoring in a safe and educational environment. Youths also participate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, activities.

The after-school program is available at Graham, Rebecca Turner, Cecil H. Parker and Grimes elementary schools. The program operates from 3-5 p.m. weekdays and will be closed on all holidays.

This program is free as a result of the support provided by the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Westchester County Youth Bureau and the Mount Vernon City School District.

“The Safe Haven after-school program has operated safely and effectively for over 10 years. The staff consists of professional and caring adults, and parents look forward to this program each year,” said DaMia Harris-Madden, executive director.
